Metal Packaging And Mmmmm - Beer
According to a February 2010 article in The Hop Press , the can may be making a come-back as the preferred vessel for Homer Simpson’s favorite golden beverage -- beer. The can does a better job than glass bottles in protecting beer from oxygen because it allows for less head space and has a better seal than the crimped bottle cap. This, coupled with the fact that the aluminum can keeps out light which can result in off-flavors of some beer, means that the can gives a better quality, better flavor beer with a longer shelf life.
As the article notes, not only do cans provide a tastier brew to the consumer, they are easier to handle and can be brought to places where glass is not allowed. From the manufacturers’ side, cans are ideal because they are easier and cheaper to ship and store -- both empty and full.
